Yeah how dare people want to be represented in the media they consume. It’s not like that’s a totally legit and reasonable criticism. Jeez people it’s a GAME it’s not REAL- media based on fiction never impacts real life! Duuuh.

do you know how hard it is to make something cater to literally everyone?
and what about people with handicaps, disabilities, skin conditions, etc., what about them not being represented? do you see that ever get blown out of proportion in a game?
i could literally take a shit on every single game i’ve played because some aspect of it has excluded the minorities i’m part of (be it asian or skin condition). i have never ever seen or played a game where a main character has something like vitiligo, which is a skin condition that is not very well known and can cause social problems, even to the point of what one could consider racism. it’s happened to me, it’s happened to others with the disease, it’s a real problem.
however
i know that realistically it is close to impossible to cater to everyone in a game. programming is hard. making a full-length game is even harder. adding a shit ton of customization? that bumps the budget way up, and honestly? it’s a game about fucking pokemon. targeted to kids. i don’t think anyone in the target demographic (which, yes, is still children despite the amount of older teens that play it since we grew up with the original games) gives a shit that oh man!! something isn’t represented.
because that’s not the point of the game.

people don’t play video games to experience reality. people play games to have a suspension of beliefs, to be immersed in some kind of fantasy world where there’s an interesting plot and the laws of our reality don’t necessarily apply. this kind of thing is right along PETA’s argument of pokemon causes animal abuse. pretty much everyone jumped on saying it’s nuts, fans know the borders between games and reality, etc.

believe me, i get there’s misrepresentation in games. there’s problems with everything. but causing huge shitfits that just make fans sound like raving lunatics isn’t the way to do it. get involved in the industry. come up with a cool idea, pitch it to an indie studio. complaining about a completely new feature being implemented as soon as it’s revealed doesn’t show the company that you’re grateful for new stuff, it makes fans look like entitled little shits that will never be pleased, no matter what the designers do.

like i said, i could very easily get angry about how something that i see as defining who i am as a person isn’t included in a video game. but you know what? i don’t really care, because that’s not why i’m playing a game. i’m playing it to enjoy it, the story behind it, and all the work that was put in it to make the game legitimately enjoyable.

You are correct, it would be impossible to represent every variation of human in a video game. But, first of all, there is a difference between including every rare anomaly in the human race and including people of color. Or in this case, specifically, dark skinned people.

Second of all, it seems you are basically saying people shouldn’t complain about it. The problem with that is if people aren’t critical of these things then they will never change. It is possible to be critical of a game and still enjoy it. I really enjoyed Bioshock Infinite. I have some criticisms regarding how they handled the race aspect, but that doesn’t mean I hate the game. I’ve been critical of a lot of games for a lot of reasons, but I’ve still enjoyed them,

Getting involved in the industry and pitching ideas to facilitate change is a nice idea, but the fact is not everyone has the time and/or resources to do this. And that basically means only people within the industry should/could be critical. Fans SHOULD be critical of the games they love, I think it is a disservice to the games to not be. We should have high expectations and we should demand more from developers. It might seem lazy or entitled to complain about it online, but in the end if there is enough similar dissent those voices will matter.

When Mass Effect 3 came out there was INSANE backlash. Talk about lunatic fans. But the fact is the ending was bad, and the fans really did deserve better. Through all of that crazed complaining we got a (slightly) better ending and the developers were, at least somewhat, held accountable.

It’s not my job to be grateful for new features. It’s the game developers job to keep their product fresh and interesting. I don’t owe them anything. I am the consumer, I am paying for the game, they should be grateful for me (us, the fans).

The fact that the game is marketed to kids doesn’t make this a non-issue. There are, after all, dark skinned children. What kind of message does that send to a kid, that lighter skin tones are worth including in the game but not their own? They are already under represented in the media, and like I already said that’s not going to change if people don’t speak out against it.

The game being based in fantasy is also irrelevant. People aren’t playing it to experience reality, but that doesn’t mean we should be ok with a fantasy world where black people (and other dark skinned people) don’t exist (or aren’t worth including as the protagonist). We should absolutely be critical of that. The reason that this is NOT the same as PETA’s complaints is that Pokemon doesn’t really effect the way animals are treated in real life. But the way POC and other minorities are portrayed in media DOES matter because it DOES effect real life, not only through the effects of representation or lack thereof, but also through the dialogue we have around it.

Hypothetical example: A fantasy game the depicts women in a sexist and abusive manner. This is bad. If the public is silent and offers no criticism, this is worse. But if people talk openly about how it is bad, why, and what needs to change, then this is good. It furthers a public dialogue about sexism and calls for change within the video game industry.

So not “causing a huge shitfit” is actually doubly bad.

That’s great that you don’t get angry at your own under representation. I’m glad you can still enjoy the games. But that doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with being critical, or even being angry. And it, like I said earlier, being critical doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the game. It just means holding games (or whatever) to a higher standard. If you don’t have a problem with or don’t feel the need to complain about representation in video games then that’s fine, you do you. But please don’t act like those that do have an issue with it and are vocal about it should stfu, because that’s just bad for everyone.

It might be close; closer than sperm jacked off into the shower, or sperm killed by spermicide on their way to the egg, or a fertilized egg that doesn’t implant in the uterus because of hormonal birth control. Closer than that, and maybe too close for comfort for some people.

I read stuff like this and it bothers me because we, Americans are so two sided. I am pro life but what bothers me is that a woman can go have an abortion and it’s ok but when a drunk driver hits and kills a pregnant woman it is murder. Two people are killed the woman and baby or just the baby from injuries. How can it be murder on one side and not the other? If the Dr is drunk when he performs the procedure is it murder then? If the woman is on her way to get an abortion and she gets hit is it just one murder if she dies.

I see what you are saying. When it comes to the law, we can’t have it both ways.

I’m not a legal expert (so apologies in advance if this doesn’t make sense.in that context) and it’s a complicated issue. Especially when you get into fetal development and viability, interpretations of the law, what to charge, ect, but basically I think it should come down to the pregnant person being in charge of their body and whether or not to continue the pregnancy.

For example, if I decide to have an abortion my doctor can’t be charged with murder because I wanted and consented to the procedure.

However, if I’m pregnant and someone beats me so severely that I miscarry, I can see them being charged with a crime over miscarriage because they terminated the pregnancy without my consent.

Obviously in practice there would be more details to consider, but I don’t feel like writing a million pages.

Got back from my strip trip earlier this week. Feels SO GOOD to be home. I had some issues with my travel buddy, but I think I’ll save that venting for another post.

In other news…

I’ve decided to hold off on getting my boobs done. I have the money now, but I keep going back and between “hell yeah!” and “meh”, and right now I’m in the “meh” zone. It doesn’t help that everyone is telling me NOT to do it. I try not to give a fuck, but it’s hard when every time you turn around its “OMG NEVER GET A BOOB JOB!!!!”

I am one semester away from finishing my BA. Well, not exactly. I’m one semester away from finishing my major, but in order to graduate I need a minor (dumb), which I haven’t even picked yet. I keep trying to figure out what I want to do with myself, but it seems every idea I come up with has some kind of issue. I feel like I need to get the show on the road, though. I love stripping but I’m fucking tired of it. I’ll save that venting for another post, as well.

My boyfriend and I were looking at our old Myspace accounts. Found pictures of me when I first moved away for college. I was a BABY. I looked so young and cute. I wish I could go back in time and let myself know, because I sure didn’t realize it at the time. In another 7 years I’ll probably be saying the same thing about my current self. Getting older is the pits, and I’ve only just started.

That reminds me, I need to reup on the various substances I have injected into my face. My natural face and expressions are starting to show… *shudder*

I’ve been neglecting tumblr because I’m away on a work trip and also because I’ve discovered weird twitter. So… Yeah. My bad.

Today is my exgirlfriend’s birthday. I don’t even know why I give a fuck, since I wouldn’t even have known if facebook hadn’t told me. It’s been over a year since we dated. While she was talking to me I was all aloof and too cool for school, but now that she’s moved on like a normal person I become a little punk that stalks her facebook (which I can’t even read because eveything is French internet slang) and whines about it.

I could go into more about how unfair and egotistical I’m being but it’s probably not necessary. The details are irrelevant, I suppose.

Anyway, I’m sure part of the reason I’m so grumpy about it is that I’m homesick. And my relationship with her is something that I use as backstory with customers so I’be been thinking about her a lot recently.

In conclusion, the moral of this story is to not be an inaccessible douche bag and let the people you care about close to you so you can enjoy them while you actually have the chance. The end.
